Joel Sartore quietly exits Nikon’s USA Ambassador Program
I often visit the Nikon Ambassadors listing on the Nikon USA’s website to see if any changes have taken place, either additions to or removals from their Ambassador’s program. On my recent visit, I noticed one name missing, that of Joel Sartore, of Photo Ark fame. According to Joel Sartore’s website, he was invited and accepted Nikon ambassador membership in April of 2016 along with Matthew Jordan Smith, Deanne Fitzmaurice and Joey Terrill.
At the end of the announcement of Joel’s ambassador acceptance on his website (https://www.joelsartore.com/nikon-ambassador/), a clarification of what ambassador membership means: The Nikon Ambassadors are authorized by Nikon to demonstrate to the public and professional image makers the capabilities and use of Nikon imaging products, but the expressive content of their work is solely their own. Nikon Ambassadors are independent contractors and visual artists and are not employees of Nikon. Nikon Ambassadors are responsible for the content of their photographs, websites, exhibitions, and visual images and the manner in which such content and images are obtained. Any messages, beliefs, or viewpoints expressed in the Nikon Ambassadors’ photographs, websites, exhibitions, or visual images do not necessarily reflect the opinions, beliefs or viewpoints of Nikon or any Nikon employee.
I was not able to find any additional information as to why Joel left the program, either on his website or external sources. As best as I can tell, Joel still uses Nikon equipment.

I was not familiar with Condor Airlines so I did a bit of research. Condor was founded in 1956 in Germany. According to it’s website, it’s Germany’s “most popular leisure airline”. The unique strips livery was introduced in 2022 to “Introduce a new brand identity: Inspired by parasols, bath towels and beach chairs, Condor now wears stripes in five colors. This illustrates the development from a leisure airline to a unique and unmistakable vacation brand.” The green and white livery in the photo I captured is their Island color theme.
Today, Nikon issues a firmware update for the Nikkor Z 180-600mm lens with the following changes: Fixed an issue that focus may be inaccurate at a focus distance of infinity with a focal length around 400mm to 600mm in a low temperature environment.
Nikon removes all website and social media references from all Nikon USA ambassador pages.
Combining the features in Capture One Pro, Capture One Enterprise along with some new features, Capture one has bundled these into a new product, Capture One Studio.
Nikon realizes that their current crop of ambassadors are too old to resonate with younger photographers, their new target market, so they retain young “Nikon Creator partners” to solve the problem
Changed the default values for the following settings displayed when connecting wirelessly:
- Encryption keys
- The password displayed after the camera's default settings are restored
• Fixed the following issues:
- Green color casting occurred with some pictures taken.
- The date and time set in camera sometimes would not be correctly applied.
- Using [Picture review] to view an image in a “tall” (portrait) orientation and zooming in the image prevented the display from being scrolled to the intended direction with multi selector or sub-selector.
- After a firmware update, the eye sensor sometimes would not function and the viewfinder would not turn on.
- The “i” menu would sometimes remain in the viewfinder when it was looked through after the shutter-release button was pressed halfway to exit the “i” menu viewed in the monitor.
