DPReview selects the Nikon Z8 product of the year
DPReview today announced their product of the year: the Nikon Z8!
”The Nikon Z8 is our product of the year for exactly the same reason it's our High-End Camera of the year: it brings the same capabilities that Nikon delivers to its pro audience in a camera that dedicated enthusiasts might be able to get hold of. It's slightly smaller than Nikon's DSLR standard bearer, the D850, while outperforming it in almost every way. Cameras continue to evolve, and we suspect more affordable cameras will start to challenge the likes of the Z8 in terms of autofocus or speed or video capabilities, but as things stand, there are very few cameras that have ever offered the all-around strength that the Z8 exhibits.”

My transition to the Nikon mirrorless Z system is now complete
With the acquisition of the Nikon Zcf camera with the kit lens, my transition from Nikon DSLRs and f mount glass to Nikon mirrorless Z cameras and Z Nikkor lenses. That’s not to say that I wont purchase additional equipment down the road but for now, I have a well rounded collection that should allow me to shoot just about anything.
Overall, I have been pleased with the performance of all the Z equipment, both lenses and bodies. The one exception would be the shortened battery life, mostly related to the Z8. That’s about the only thing that I miss about DSLRs.

Joel Sartore quietly exits Nikon’s USA Ambassador Program
I often visit the Nikon Ambassadors listing on the Nikon USA’s website to see if any changes have taken place, either additions or removals. On my recent visit, I noticed one name missing, that of Joel Sartore, of the Photo Ark fame. According to Joel Sartore’s website, he was invited and accepted Nikon ambassador membership in April of 2016 along with Matthew Jordan Smith, Deanne Fitzmaurice and Joey Terrill.
Photographing US Youth Soccer’s National Championship Series Regional and Presidents Cup Regional Tournaments with the Nikon Z6, Z8, and Z9 Cameras
As in year’s past, Robert G Allen photography was lead photographer for the 2023 US Youth Soccer events in June in Boise Idaho. Shooting along with a US Youth Soccer staff photographer, we covered numerous games, bouncing from one soccer field to the next as we strived to provide as much coverage as possible among the 20 soccer fields riding on a golf cart between games over a four day period.
