Super Blue Moon with the Nikon Z7II and The Nikon NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S Lens

It was a clear morning in Boise Idaho, perfect weather to observe the recent blue moon.

Normally, I would use the Nikon COOLPIX P950 camera but at the last minute, chose to use one of my full frame Nikon's instead.

Originally, I was going to use the NIKKOR Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR lens but to keep the weight as low as possible, I store that lens without the tripod collar. I learned without the collar, there is no tripod mount on the lens body and since the moon would be setting soon, I didn’t have the time to mount the collar in time.

So, I ended up using the Nikkor Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S lens instead. I mounted the lens to the Z7II along with the Z TELECONVERTER TC-1.4x on my new Manfrotto Be Free Advance tripod along with up scaling with Topaz Photo AI created the resulting image.

Overall, I’m pleased with the results. Stay tune for reviews of all the mentioned equipment.

Nikon COOLPIX P950 captures Condor Airlines at 35K feet

I was not familiar with Condor Airlines so I did a bit of research. Condor was founded in 1956 in Germany. According to it’s website, it’s Germany’s “most popular leisure airline”. The unique strips livery was introduced in 2022 to “Introduce a new brand identity: Inspired by parasols, bath towels and beach chairs, Condor now wears stripes in five colors. This illustrates the development from a leisure airline to a unique and unmistakable vacation brand.” The green and white livery in the photo I captured is their Island color theme.

DPReview selects the Nikon Z8 product of the year

DPReview today announced their product of the year: the Nikon Z8!

”The Nikon Z8 is our product of the year for exactly the same reason it's our High-End Camera of the year: it brings the same capabilities that Nikon delivers to its pro audience in a camera that dedicated enthusiasts might be able to get hold of. It's slightly smaller than Nikon's DSLR standard bearer, the D850, while outperforming it in almost every way. Cameras continue to evolve, and we suspect more affordable cameras will start to challenge the likes of the Z8 in terms of autofocus or speed or video capabilities, but as things stand, there are very few cameras that have ever offered the all-around strength that the Z8 exhibits.”

My transition to the Nikon mirrorless Z system is now complete

With the acquisition of the Nikon Zcf camera with the kit lens, my transition from Nikon DSLRs and f mount glass to Nikon mirrorless Z cameras and Z Nikkor lenses. That’s not to say that I wont purchase additional equipment down the road but for now, I have a well rounded collection that should allow me to shoot just about anything.
Overall, I have been pleased with the performance of all the Z equipment, both lenses and bodies. The one exception would be the shortened battery life, mostly related to the Z8. That’s about the only thing that I miss about DSLRs.

5th Anniversary of the Nikon Z Series of Mirrorless Cameras and Z lenses - Including original launch video

We are approaching the 5th anniversary of the Nikon Z camera and lens system. I have to say that I’m surprised how far both Nikon’s Z camera’s and lens’s have come since 2018. As you will see while watching the original launch video, Nikon expects the Z platform to be the platform for the next 100 years (until 2117)!
